Of the six league cuts stocked, soccer is the closest to the body — and nearly every sizing complaint about soccer shirts comes from somebody ordering the letter they wear somewhere else. Basketball is standard, football is boxy, baseball is full and hockey is enormous. Soccer is shaped to sit against you the way match kit does, because that is what it is.
Get that one thing right and the rest is a tape measure.
One chest, six answers
This is the fastest way through the whole question. Find your chest measurement on the left and read across:
| Chest (in) | NFL | NBA | MLB | NHL | Soccer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 33–35 | S | S | S | S | XS–S |
| 35–37 | S | S–M | S–M | S | S |
| 37–40 | M | M–L | M | S–M | M |
| 40–43 | L | L | L | M | L |
| 43–47 | XL | XL | XL | L | XL |
| 47–51 | 2XL | 2XL | 2XL | XL | 2XL |
| 51–55 | 3XL | 3XL | 3XL | 2XL | 3XL |
| 55+ | 4XL | 3XL | 3XL | 3XL | 3XL |
The column that matters here is the last one. Soccer agrees with football and baseball at almost every row, which is why people assume it agrees everywhere — and then order a shirt in the middle of winter and find it does not fit over anything.
Men's soccer chart
Body measurements in inches, from the size guide.
| Size | Chest (in) | Chest (cm) | Body length (in) | Body length (cm) | US | EU |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 33–35 | 84–89 | 27 | 69 | 34–36 | 44 |
| S | 35–37 | 89–94 | 28 | 71 | 36–38 | 46 |
| M | 37–40 | 94–102 | 29 | 74 | 38–41 | 48–50 |
| L | 40–43 | 102–109 | 30 | 76 | 42–44 | 52–54 |
| XL | 43–47 | 109–119 | 31 | 79 | 46–48 | 56 |
| 2XL | 47–51 | 119–130 | 32 | 81 | 50–52 | 58–60 |
| 3XL | 51–55 | 130–140 | 33 | 84 | 54–56 | 62 |
The rule printed under that chart is the one that fixes most mistakes: if you like your shirts loose, or you plan to wear something underneath, go one size up from your row rather than hoping it stretches. Soccer fabric is a lightweight knit built to move moisture, not to give.
Women's soccer chart
Athletic too, but shaped through the waist with shorter sleeves. The US dress-size column is the quickest route:
| Size | Chest (in) | Chest (cm) | Waist (in) | Body length (in) | US |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 30–32 | 76–81 | 24–25 | 25 | 2–4 |
| S | 32–34 | 81–86 | 25–27 | 26 | 4–6 |
| M | 34–37 | 86–94 | 27–30 | 26.5 | 8–10 |
| L | 37–40 | 94–102 | 30–33 | 27 | 12–14 |
| XL | 40–44 | 102–112 | 33–37 | 27.5 | 16–18 |
| 2XL | 44–48 | 112–122 | 37–41 | 28 | 20–22 |
Youth, and when to move off it
Youth sizing is unisex and shared across all six leagues — one letter means the same thing whether the shirt is a soccer one, a basketball one or a football one.
| Size | Age | Chest (in) | Chest (cm) | Height (in) | Height (cm) | Weight (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 7–8 | 26–27 | 66–69 | 50–54 | 127–137 | 55–70 |
| M | 9–12 | 28–30 | 71–76 | 55–60 | 140–152 | 75–95 |
| L | 13–15 | 31–33 | 79–84 | 61–63 | 155–160 | 100–120 |
| XL | 16–18 | 34–36 | 86–91 | 64–67 | 163–170 | 125–145 |
Two habits: when a child is near the top of an age band, take the next size up — they grow out of a shirt long before they wear one out. And a youth XL hands over to a men's small with almost no gap, so past roughly 5'6" move to the adult chart rather than squeezing another season out of youth XL.
What the soccer range looks like in stock
- Youth soccer shirt #1, crimson, Washington State Cougars — $40.99. A lightweight college build.
- Youth soccer shirt #1, white, Washington State Cougars — $40.99.
- Youth soccer shirt #67, navy, West Virginia Mountaineers — $40.99.
- Youth soccer shirt #67, gold, West Virginia Mountaineers — $40.99.
The club range is where the depth is, though — and that is where most people should be looking. The Manchester United collection, the Liverpool collection, the Real Madrid collection, the Barcelona collection, the Arsenal collection and the Bayern Munich collection are the six most-visited club pages in the shop.
The difference between the two halves of that list matters. The college soccer shirts above are lightweight builds made for training and warm days, and they are cut accordingly — they run closer than a heavyweight club shirt on the same letter. If you are used to a club shirt and you order a college one, expect it to feel a size narrower, and either order up or accept the fit.
The other thing to know about club shirts specifically: they are released in a home version first and an alternate later, and the two are not the same garment. The alternate is often cut slightly differently from the home shirt even at the same size, because the fabric is different. If you own one and are ordering the other, measure again rather than assuming.

Frequently asked questions
Should I size up for a soccer jersey?
If you like a loose fit or plan to wear a layer underneath, yes. Soccer is the closest cut stocked and the fabric does not stretch.
Is a 40-inch chest a large in every sport?
No — it is a large in soccer, football and baseball, a large in basketball, and only a medium in hockey. The cross-league table converts it in one step.
What is the EU equivalent of a men's soccer large?
EU 52–54, for a chest of 40–43 inches (102–109 cm).
Do youth soccer shirts use their own chart?
No — youth sizing is unisex and shared across all six leagues, sized by age band, chest, height and weight.
When should a teenager move to an adult size?
At around 5'6" (168 cm). Youth XL and a men's small sit almost on top of each other, so there is no gap to wait out.
